Dies Academicus: 'Responsibility and contribution – universities and their role in democracy' Discussion with Paulus Wagner

03.03.2026

To kick off the next semester question, we are focusing on the interplay between universities and democracy. How is knowledge of democracy generated – and is it under pressure? How is it communicated to and shared with the general public? We will discuss what role universities can play in a strong democratic society today.

On 12 March from 2:00 p.m., the University of Vienna will host a panel discussion on the occasion of the 661st anniversary of its founding on the topic: 'Responsibility and contribution - unviersities and their role in democracy'

Together with Rector Sebastian Schütze, Tim Crane (CEU), Sophie Lecheler (Research Platform Trustworthy Science Communication) and Paulus Wagner (University of Vienna) will discuss the role universities can play today for a strong democratic society.
